Southwest Airlines: Spreading the LUV All Year Long

Each year, Valentine’s Day rolls around and we’re all reminded to spread a little love, but for our beLUVed airline client, Southwest Airlines, spreading the “LUV” is something they do all year long.

Southwest Airlines in known as the LUV airline for several reasons – it’s first flights were from Dallas Love Field in 1971 and throughout the 1970s they embraced the term, serving “Love Bites” on planes, issuing tickets from their “Love Machines” and, today, their NYSE symbol is “LUV.”  For almost 40 years (Southwest will celebrate its 40th anniversary in June), the airline has spread its LUV from coast to coast with low fares and legendary customer service.

Southwest has been showing the Mile High City the LUV since reentering the market in 2006 and last year looked for new, fun ways to engage in the Denver community.  In addition to rolling out the “Dedicated to Denver” advertising campaign, Southwest set out to add value to the events and venues we already LUV in Denver:

  • The Southwest Porch at Skyline Park opened last September and is a relaxing spot to enjoy the Mile High City’s 300+ days of annual sunshine in the heart of Downtown Denver.  Guests can enjoy authentic Neapolitan-style pizza from Brava! Pizzeria Della Strada and drinks served up by Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret, with a little flavor of Southwest’s hospitality.

  • And, I hope you had a chance to take a spin around the Southwest Rink at Skyline Park!  Southwest invited Mile High outdoor enthusiasts to lace up their skates starting the day after Thanksgiving and while open, Downtown Denver’s only outdoor ice rink welcomed more than 30,000 skaters.

  • In July, Southwest launched a partnership with Mile High Pedicabs to offer “No Fee Pedicab Rides” during 20 popular, local events in and around Downtown Denver, including Rockies and Nuggets games and Taste of Colorado – a terrestrial twist on taking residents and visitors where they want to go.  A “FREE RIDES” flag on the back of the pedicabs signaled when ride were free, courtesy of Southwest.

  • Southwest also provided support for the Downtown Denver Partnership’s free outdoor summer events in Skyline Park, including the Saturday evening movie series and the Friday afternoon concert series, as a way to support events for Downtown visitors and residents of all ages.  To “sweeten” the attraction of free movies in the park, Southwest partnered with the Denver Cupcake Truck to deliver free cupcakes to movie watchers.

And the Southwest LUV will continue – even after Valentine’s Day is behind us!  Be on the lookout for “FREE RIDES” at events in and around Denver this year, as a new series of “No Fee Pedicab Rides” will continue through the end of the year.  Later this Spring, the Southwest Porch at Skyline Park will officially reopen, welcoming warmer weather and all those in favor of enjoying good pizza and a beer in the heart of Downtown Denver.

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone.  And, much LUV to our friends at Southwest Airlines.
