Strengthening Crisis Readiness by Rehearsing Response Plans and Activating a Crisis Simulation
Linhart helped a national commodity promotion board strengthen organizational preparedness, uncover crisis plan gaps and improve cross-functional alignment through a realistic crisis simulation designed to protect consumer confidence and business continuity.

Challenge

A national commodity promotion board responsible for consumer education, research, advertising and public relations had detailed crisis communications plans in place for a range of potential issues. However, the organization recognized that written plans alone were not enough. To effectively protect consumer trust and respond to emerging threats, team members across disciplines needed practical experience applying those plans, understanding their individual responsibilities and working together under pressure.

Strategy

Linhart PR developed a training approach focused on turning crisis planning into crisis readiness. Rather than reviewing procedures in a traditional workshop setting, the team recommended a hands-on simulation that would allow participants to test decision-making, communications protocols and cross-functional coordination in a realistic environment. The goal was to strengthen confidence in the organization's response capabilities while identifying opportunities to improve existing plans.

Execution

Linhart PR designed and facilitated a half-day, multi-phase crisis simulation involving more than a dozen participants representing public relations, food safety, health, supply chain, policy and retailer relations functions.

The exercise challenged participants to respond in real time to escalating crisis scenarios, ranging from initial rumors to negative national coverage to adverse actions by retail partners to activist campaigns. As the simulation progressed, participants were required to make decisions, coordinate messaging, evaluate stakeholder impacts and implement elements of the organization's existing crisis response plans. Linhart PR guided discussions, introduced new developments and facilitated post-exercise evaluations to capture lessons learned and flag plan gaps.

Results

  • Strengthened organizational readiness to respond to complex, high-stakes situations.
  • Increased understanding of roles and responsibilities across the cross-functional crisis team.
  • Reinforced the value of the organization's crisis communications and contingency plans.
  • Identified multiple tactical and strategic vulnerabilities that were assigned for resolution and plan enhancement.
  • Improved stakeholder collaboration among food safety, health, supply chain, policy, retailer relations and communications.
  • Highlighted the importance of coordinated engagement across the value chain, from producers to retail partners.

By moving crisis preparation from theory to practice, the organization gained greater confidence in its ability to protect consumer trust, respond effectively under pressure and continuously strengthen its crisis preparedness program.
